The safety of our youth is the absolute priority of Pack 101. We follow the rigorous standards set by Scouting America to ensure a secure environment where Scouts can learn and grow without unnecessary risk.
The primary authority for all our activities is the Guide to Safe Scouting.
The Final Word: If a question arises regarding the safety of an activity—from pocketknife use to water safety—we defer entirely to the GSS.
Prohibited Activities: Any activity specifically listed as "unauthorized" in the GSS is strictly prohibited in Pack 101.
Deference: This policy is intended to supplement, not replace, the GSS. In any conflict of information, the Guide to Safe Scouting takes precedence.
Every registered leader in our Pack must complete the official Safeguarding Youth Training. However, we encourage all parents to take this free online training to understand the barriers to abuse.
Two-Deep Leadership: A minimum of two registered adult leaders, both of whom must be 21 years of age or older, are required for every Scouting activity.
No One-on-One Contact: There is absolutely no one-on-one contact between an adult and a Scout (other than their own child). All interactions must be in view of other adults and Scouts.
When planning any Pack activity—whether it's a Den meeting or a hike at Kingston City Park—we apply the SAFE checklist:
S – Supervision: Youth are supervised by qualified and trustworthy adults.
A – Assessment: We identify and mitigate potential hazards before the activity begins.
F – Fitness and Skill: We ensure that the activity is age-appropriate and that participants have the necessary skills.
E – Equipment and Environment: We use the right gear for the job and respect the weather and terrain.
Safety is the responsibility of everyone present.
The "Stop" Authority: Any parent, leader, or Scout has the authority to stop an activity immediately if they perceive an unsafe condition.
Medical Forms: Every Scout and participating adult must have an updated Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A & B) on file with the Pack to ensure leaders are aware of allergies or medical needs.
While we strive to provide a fulfilling and impactful program, we will never compromise on safety for the sake of "fun." If an activity cannot be performed within the guidelines of the Guide to Safe Scouting, we will modify it or cancel it. We want every child to return home from Scouting stronger, wiser, and—above all—safe.
