Source: All Scouts must use an official Scouting America Pinewood Derby kit.
Purchase: Kits are not provided; you can purchase them directly through the Pack or at your local Scout Shop.
Materials: The axles, wheels, and body must be made from the materials provided in the official kit.
Wheels: While you must use official wheels, additional official Scouting America wheels can be purchased separately if you want different colors.
Your car must pass inspection on race day to compete. Please use these measurements:
Max Weight: 5 ounces (no loose materials allowed in or on the car).
Max Width: 2.75 inches.
Max Length: 7 inches.
Clearance: The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices or springs.
To keep our track in top condition and ensure a level playing field, we have a strict lubrication policy:
Show up "Dry": Do not apply any lubrication to your car at home.
Official Lube Station: All cars must arrive with NO lubricant.
Allowed Types: Powdered graphite will be applied at the race location under leader supervision.
Prohibited: No lubricating oil of any kind (like WD-40) is allowed.
The following items will result in a failed inspection:
Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings.
Starting devices or internal "engines."
Moving or loose weights (all weights must be securely fastened).
Any kind of suspension or spring system.
Need Help? If you don't have tools at home, reach out on Band. Our Pack often hosts "Workshop Days" where we will have tools, scales, and devices for ensuring track compliance and balance.
Tip: If you are unsure if your design meets the requirements, share a photo in our Band chats. It’s much easier to fix a width issue in your garage than it is at the check-in table.
